Generative AI

AI-Powered Knowledge Assistant

A retrieval-augmented assistant that answers questions from internal documents with grounded responses, source citations, and permission-aware access.

This is a reference implementation — an illustrative project that shows how we approach this type of problem. It is not a client engagement and makes no claims about results for a specific organization.

The problem

Teams lose time searching across wikis, shared drives, and PDFs. Generic chatbots can produce confident but unsupported answers, and they often ignore who is allowed to see which documents.

Approach

  1. 01

    Document ingestion

Connectors load documents, preserve structure such as headings and tables, and split content into retrievable passages with metadata.

  2. 02

    Hybrid retrieval

Keyword and semantic search are combined and re-ranked so the most relevant passages are selected for each question.

  3. 03

    Grounded answers with citations

The model answers only from retrieved passages and cites each source. When the evidence is insufficient, it says so.

  4. 04

    Permission-aware access

Access controls from the source systems are applied at retrieval time, so users only receive answers from documents they can open.

Architecture

  • Ingestion workers with document parsing and chunking
  • Vector and keyword indexes with access-control metadata
  • Retrieval service with re-ranking
  • LLM orchestration layer with citation formatting and refusal handling
  • Web interface with source previews and feedback capture

Evaluation methodology

How we would measure whether this system works — defined before it is built.

  • A curated question set with expected sources for each answer
  • Automated checks for citation accuracy and unsupported claims
  • Permission tests confirming restricted content is never returned
  • Reviewer feedback loop for continuous improvement
